CATCH THEM YOUNG PROGARM
INTRODUCTION
There is no better time to reach university students for Christ than to reach them in their first year, when they have not been polluted with all kinds of wrong philosophy. Experience has shown that at this stage many of them are usually very tender and approachable. They have not yet been committed to various groups on campus, their trust could be easily won.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
1. To welcome freshers (new students) resuming in June and help them in their registration so as to get their attention.
2. To expose a reasonable number of them to the gospel of Christ.
3. To make them become active members of Student Life Movement, where they would be matured in the way of the Lord and trained in the how tos of Evangelism and Discipleship.
4. To create an awareness and generate great momentum for our ministry on campus.
BACKGROUND
Obafemi Awolowo University is a reknown University in Nigeria with a population of over 25,000 students. It is a school that has maintained a great record of high academic standard. It is the dream of thousands of high school leavers; although quite a number of them still have this subtle fear of how they would survive if they are admitted on O.A.U.; only because of the schools standard.
Experience has shown that fresh students are open to any group who offer them assistance on how they can succeed on O.A.U. campus and get good grades.
AN IDEA
Capitalising on the need of every fresh student on O.A.U. campus (the need to succeed and get good grades despite the school high standard), we are adopting a strategy that seeks to meet these felt needs.
That is the Freshman Survival Kit Strategy! But we are repackaging this U.S. idea to suit our local situation.
What Does It Involve?
It involves:
1. Designing a fresher survey questionnaire which seek to find out the opinion of fresh students on issues relating to Academics, Spiritual life and Contemporary issues. At the same time, the survey is a way of getting their particulars like names, course, room addresses, level, e-mail, etc.
2. Preparing a pack called the Freshers Survival Kit containing:
A new Testament Bible.
A novelty that is, an audio CD with selective musics dubbed from C.C.C.I. website and other Christian sites.
A paper titled: 31 Tips Towards Academic Excellence on O.A.U. (A real life experience).
An article titled:…“What Makes Ife Great a short story on significant historical events that happened in Ife from establishment to date. S.L.M. Brochure. S.L.M. Semester Program.
All these items would be packaged in a nice transparent nylon jacket written on it boldly FRESHERS SURVIVAL KIT.
HOW IT WORKS
Imagine one of our trained key student approaching a new student saying: Hello Friend, Deolu is my name, a 500 level student of Urban and Regional Planning of this great citadel of learning. I guess you are a fresher. Whats your name? I ve got a good news for you. I have with me a pack that contains all you need to succeed on this campus, I know you will like to have a look! .. All you need to do to get this pack is to fill this Freshers Survey Questionnaire And afterwards we invite you to a party/seminar, where you would learn a lot of things about O.A.U. and have opportunity to ask questions.
OTHER LOGISTICS
- There would be 2 categories of trained and well checked out speaker teams who will administer the questionnaires and give out the packs strategically, i.e., each of our people would put on a tag captioned Freshers Assistant.
The second group are the Stationary Team. Our stationary teams would have a stand and stay in a conspicuous spot on campus where freshers could easily locate them and make enquiry. The stand would be labeled FRESHERS ENQUIRY STAND.
- Each of the questionnaire must be properly filled before the Fresher gets our pack. Our officials must pay the student a visit latest 48 hours to the time of administering the questionnaire.
- There would be a follow up party 2 to 3 weeks after the administration of the questionnaires. A very relax meeting where Student Life Movement would be formerly and properly introduced and student given opportunity to meet one on one with us. In this gathering, these freshers are further challenged to attend a 12 hours workshop on Personal Management Skills and I.Q. Seminar, which will run for 6 weeks (2 hour per week). This is to further increase their commitment to S.L.M. During this period, we will continue to do our ground work of developing friendship (one on one rapport. Of course, simultaneously, there is ongoing one on one follow up in their rooms and hostels where Four Spiritual Laws is shared with them.
Within this period, these fresh students are challenged to attend our weekly meetings, and they are gradually absorbed into our small group discipleship.
PRAYER PLAN
Prayer and fasting by the key organisers (Planning Committee) starting from 2 months before the program commence.
Prayer roster: Every member of S.L.M. involved. Dividing the movement into 7 groups. Each group take a day of the week to pray and fast for this program; before, during and even after the program.
3 day retreat before the program commence.
During the program Morning and Evening Prayer Sessions.
Mobilizing our ministry partners, staff advisers and fellow colleagues to pray along with us for the successful execution of this strategy .
